This family is from Afghanistan. The fled from the Taliban and are now stranded in Greece. They are staying in Malasaka, 40 km away from Athens. They do not have money and havenât moved from the camp. They donât know about their future and whether they will be able to stay in Europe.
Alongside a busy motorway lies Elliniko, Athenâs former international airport, now a makeshift camp for mainly Afghan refugees. Here we meet Masih* (*not his real name), a man in his twenties, who says he left Afghanistan after being threatened by the Taliban. After a long, lonely journey through Iran, Turkey, Lesvos and Athens he reached Idomeni just as the borders were closing: âI was the first person to be turned back. We were hoping it would open again, but we stayed there for eight days. When the police forced some Afghans to go back to Athens we decided to get the bus back. Now there is a rumour that they [governments] will say on 14 March whether Afghans can travel.â
