Ilham Tohti, an economics professor at Central University for Nationalities in Beijing, the founder of âUighur Onlineâ website, and a well-known critic of Chinaâs ethnic and religious policies in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR), who was sentenced to life imprisonment on 23 September 2014.

The protesters are a mixture of student groups, pro-democracy activists and the recently formed Occupy Central movement.
